Digboi is well known for being the birth place of the oil industry in India, with the first oil well being drilled here in 1901. What very few people know is that the picturesque golf course at Digboi, located amidst pristine surroundings, has the distinction of being the first 18-hole golf course in Assam.
The Club is bordered on three sides by the beautiful Deihing Forest Reserve which is home to wide varieties of animals that often wander out onto the course. This reserve is home to elephants, barking deer, wild boar, leopards, & a variety of birds Established in 1930 by the British, the course was shifted to the present location in 1943 as a par 70 course. The original designer is not known, but the subsequent re-designers (modifiers really) include Tiger Kapoor, Lord JP, Sir Larry, Hon'ble Rev Phukan, Duke Deka & Baron Ahmed.
The course is now a par 72 with the longest hole measuring 530 yards and the shortest called "Stairway to Heaven" playing 127 yards. One must not be misled by this hole as the maximum score on this hole is a 20 !!! A World War II airstrip was made on the course, which forms part of the current 5th fairway. The Par 5, 9th hole is the one where a professional—Pradyuman Singh Guleria hit a driver, 4 iron combination for an incredible 2—the only albatross recorded on this course. MORE TRIVIA : Remains of an oil well are located at Hole no 11, which is appropriately named "Captain's Well 992? as it is near this hole that the well was drilled, having been inaugurated by the then Golf Captain. Thank goodness they never found any oil there. Hole no 17 is appropriately named "Hornbills' Haunt" with father, mother, daughter and son hornbill off on frequent jaunts. This golf course is a natural one with few artificial developments. The undulating topography ensures that golfers have to use all their skills to stay on the fairways. In addition, nullahs can catch many an unsuspecting soul unawares, so a good caddy is of paramount importance. The newly grown roughs can be treacherous without without preferred lies so players are well advised to stay away from them. With a quaint & fascinating clubhouse & the ubiquitous 19th hole , a round at this course is both a pleasure & a privilege .
